Projects for when you feel the need to knit

Grab-n-Go Knitting Projects

Ready Anytime You Feel the Need to Knit

You know the feeling. You need something to knit but have no time to get a project started. First, you might start looking at what you have but it’s just a mess of needles, yarn, and projects that didn’t work. What if you had something ready that you could grab whenever you feel the need to knit?

Grab-n-go knitting projects are something all knitters need.  It's security that whenever you feel the need you have something to knit ready to go.  I have found that I need to have these ready-to-go projects for traveling, knitting group sessions, and when I’m out of ideas but need to knit.

I first realized this years ago when traveling with my husband and kids.  I wasn’t the best packer, and I didn’t always plan ahead.  When we traveled, I packed the kid's bags, my bags, and anything I thought we would need on the trip.  Then if I had time I would get my knitting ready.  Sometimes this was 5 minutes before I had to run out the door.   This wasn't the best idea.  I would run to get my supplies and copy a pattern quickly on the copier, hoping nothing important was cut off the page.  Then I would race to the car and hope we hadn’t forgotten anything or anybody.   After we’d been driving awhile, I would open my pattern, hoping I had everything I needed.  Then if I had everything, I would try to cast on between handing out snacks and reading driving directions to my husband.  This didn’t make for a relaxing start to our trip or my project.  Having the knitting with me even if it wasn’t great made me feel good.  It felt like a security to have it near me.

When heading out to the monthly knitting group I also like to have a project ready.  Sometimes what I’m working on at home is too big or I’m at a crucial part of the project that needs extra focus,  this doesn’t work when visiting and having a little wine with friends.

Now I have a few grab-n-go projects ready for myself.   It's nice to know I can pick a bag and go out the door without having to think.   When I travel, I have my suitcase packed and ready at the door and the grab-n-go knitting project is the front seat of the car. When I go to knitting group now, I relax and enjoy the food and friends.  I’ve created a step-by-step guide to making these projects for yourself or as a gift to a knitter.   The steps include which patterns work best, what supplies you’ll need, and directions on how to start each project.

I hope this helps with your next trip knitting.   I love to knit in the car, on a plane, or in the hotel when on a trip.  Heck, I even take my knitting to the pool or beach.  Knitting helps me with anxiety while traveling.  I love to travel but knowing if I need to wait a long time at the airport or for any other reason, I feel the need to knit, my grab-and-go project is with me.  It calms my nerves as much as my yoga does and it doesn’t look as funny as doing a down dog in the airport.  It also is something I love to do so much that I can’t imagine not having it with me.
