Knitting Stories

Write your own Knitting Story…

We all have stories to tell.  Maybe you’ve tried journaling or jotting some thoughts down, but have you ever thought about writing about your knitting?  Why would it matter and how will it improve your knitting?

My Story…a research project about writing knitting stories…

“My Story” is a current research project encouraging knitters to share stories about themselves.  Researchers want to know what motivates knitters, things that encourage them, and things that discourage them from knitting.  They also want to hear from people who continue to knit even when it's not a positive experience and what motivates them to continue. The stories could include how you feel about knitting and its influence on your life.  No names or contact details are shared and you can tell your story anonymously if you'd prefer.

While researching for this blog I found “My Story” a research project for Stitchlinks.   Stitchlinks is non-profit organization with a therapeutic knitting site of resources and information for knitters.  The site includes a supportive community that promotes the therapeutic benefits of crafts, particularly knitting, to improve health and well-being. The nonprofit was developed for people who are well or those living with long-term medical conditions.   Stitchlinks also supports pioneering research about the therapeutic benefits of knitting such as the “My Story” project. The research is shared as a resource for knitters, clinicians, teachers, group leaders, and professionals who wish to use knitting therapeutically.

“My Story” is an ongoing project that encourages knitters to share stories about themselves.  Researchers use the stories to find out what motivates knitters, things that encourage them to keep knitting, and things that discourage them.  They want to hear what motivates knitters and why some people continue to knit even when it's not a positive experience. The stories bring light to the benefits of knitting and how to use knitting for therapy. If you are interested, you can read other knitters’ stories at stitchlinks.com.  Look for the My Story tab for the stories and learn how to share your own story there.

Writing to improve your Knitting

How can writing about knitting help you?    Writing is a therapeutic way to work with your mind and trace your thought patterns.  As you write your ideas, thoughts, and memories on paper you start to discover how your current thoughts have developed. Your own story can include how you feel about knitting and its influence on your life. Writing can also improve your knitting as you learn things about yourself and discover ways to improve your skills.

Knitting, writing, and yoga are forms of self-expression. Writing what comes to you, knitting each stitch 1 by 1, breathing while holding each pose…are all gifts that allow us to slow down and be with our thoughts and clear our minds.  We can use these practices to create space and time to look inward and create better ways to do things…including improving our knitting skills.
